What is the basic algorithm for gray-scaling, best fit linear and histogram equalization for image processing?

I want to know how the algorithm i asked works for an image. I want make the image gray, then use the best fit for light intensity, and used the histogram equalization for normalized the image.... This is for preprocessing for my neural network pattern recognizer.. but i really dont understand the algorithm, how it works.. thanks...
