Why does everyone want cheap oil instead of alternative fuel sources?

Can't the people of the US realize that the best war we can wage is getting off the OIL TRAIN? Get out from under the oily haze that comes from the middle east, and at the same time clean up the environment, and possibly reverse or auge global warming?
