Why do people try and discredit polls?

I would not discredit them but they are at best an educated guess. If you would have looked at the polls in 2004 Kerry would have won, but I think the best example of how the polls can be misleading goes back to 1948. Anybody who has taken an American History cl has probally seen the photo of Truman holding up a newspaper saying "Dewey wins."
