Can I sign Birth certificate?

A friend of mine is pregnant and does not want the child she is wnat my husband and I to take the baby and raise him as our own which is something we really want to do cause we can't have children the only thing is we can't afford adoption so her docotor said that I could sign the baby's birth certificate. Is that true? Can I sign the birth certificate?
