How did the first cells reproduce?

My teacher said the first cells were just lipid bilayers that arranged themselves into rings. To continue evolutionary development the early cells have to somehow undergo mutations through reproduction. Were they already capable of mitosis? Mitosis seems awfully complicated with all those enzymes and spindle-fibers, etc. Did they reproduce themselves in a different, more basic way? If so, how?
